Applications for Food Bank Evaluation and Grant Program

Sponsors:
Gretchen Swanson Center for Nutrition
Amount:
$25,000
External Deadline:
04/16/21
Opportunity Information:

The Gretchen Swanson Center for Nutrition welcomes applications for its Rooted in Evidence Food Bank Grant program. Through the program, selected food banks and their partners will work to enhance measurement and evaluation related to their services. In addition, the grants will provide funding for innovative and dynamic programming aimed at improving the health and dietary quality of emergency food recipients. Applicants should consider basing their proposal around evaluation efforts of a program that is either novel (i.e., not commonly done by food banks) or has an innovative twist. Four grants of up to $25,000 will be awarded.

As the focus of Rooted in Evidence is to enhance evaluation and dissemination capacity, the center anticipates that food banks will allocate dedicated staff time for communication and collaboration with GSCN through virtual trainings and technical assistance, data collection and management activities, and reporting. If a food bank's internal staff has limited experience with evaluation, it is highly recommended that applicants partner with a local researcher/evaluator/graduate student to assist in the development of their evaluation plans and help with data collection efforts. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, it is recommended that applicants consider the feasibility of proposed programming and evaluation activities, particularly giving thought to activities that adhere to social distancing and public health guidelines.

While applicants are encouraged to send GSCN a brief statement outlining their intention to submit a proposal, if an applicant does not submit an Intent to Submit Statement, they are still eligible to submit a full proposal. Intent to Submit statements are due April 1, 2021.

Nonprofit food bank organizations with tax-exempt status according to section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code are eligible to apply. For purposes of this RFP, a food bank is defined as an organization that sources and stores food that will be directly distributed to individuals or distributed to partner agencies, such as community food pantries. Food pantries are encouraged to collaborate, but the primary applicant must be a food bank organization.

For complete program guidelines and application instructions, see the Gretchen Swanson Center for Nutrition website.
