Research Development Opportunity Kick-off events are introductions to specific funding opportunities that provide an overview of requirements, advice and lessons learned from experienced faculty, and a chance to network with other ASU faculty.

Topic: NIH Director’s Program Solicitations

The High-Risk, High-Reward Research program supports exceptionally creative scientists pursuing highly innovative research with the potential for broad impact in biomedical, behavioral, or social sciences within the NIH mission. Preliminary data are not required. The program's four constituent NIH Director's awards provide a diverse set of funding opportunities. See the individual award websites for more information and application help.

There are four programs with rolling deadlines, different requirements and objectives, and various funding amounts.

2022 NIH Director’s Early Independence Award (DP5) is for exceptional junior scientists bypassing postdoctoral training to launch independent research careers. This is limited at the university level. Limited Submission link: https://asu.infoready4.com/#competitionDetail/1842277 (due July 8, 2021). Due to sponsor September 3, 2021.

2022 NIH Director’s New Innovator Award is for exceptionally creative early career scientists proposing innovative, high-impact projects. Due to sponsor August 20, 2021.

2022 NIH Director’s Pioneer Award (DP1) is for scientists with outstanding records of creativity pursuing pioneering approaches to major challenges. Due to sponsor September 10, 2021.

2022 NIH Director’s Transformative Award is for individuals or teams proposing groundbreaking, unconventional research with the potential to create new scientific paradigms. Due September 1, 2021.
