Opportunity Kick-off: 2022 NSF Engineering Research Centers (ERC)
Research Development Opportunity Kick-off events are introductions to specific funding opportunities that provide an overview of requirements, advice and lessons learned from experienced faculty, and a chance to network with other ASU faculty.
The ERC program supports convergent research (CR) that will lead to strong societal impact. Each ERC has interacting foundational components that go beyond the research project, including engineering workforce development (EWD) at all participant stages, diversity and a culture of inclusion (DCI) where all participants gain mutual benefit, and value creation within an innovation ecosystem (IE) that will outlast the lifetime of the ERC. The logical reasoning that links the proposed activities to the identified goals for each ERC should be clear.
[Funding] up to $156,000,000 to support up to six newly funded ERCs for the first five years. Subject to the availability of funds, NSF anticipates $21,000,000 to support Year 1 for up to six awards.
NSF expects to make the ERC awards in the summer of 2024. The initial ERC award would be for five years. The budget distribution among the lead and core partners should be appropriate for the scope of work and activities planned for each foundational component.
