WHAT IS DOE’s Early Career Research Program?

The 2024 DOE ERCP program supports the development of individual research programs of outstanding scientists early in their careers and stimulates research careers in the disciplines supported by the DOE Office of Science.

To be eligible for the program, a researcher must be an untenured, tenure-track assistant or associate professor and have received a PhD in the past 12 years. Awards to an institution of higher education will be approximately $875,000 over five years. Proposed research topics must fall within the programmatic priorities of DOE’s Office of Science, as detailed in the program announcement.

Early career researchers may apply to one of eight Office of Science program offices:

  • Advanced Scientific Computing Research;
  • Biological and Environmental Research;
  • Basic Energy Sciences;
  • Fusion Energy Sciences;
  • High Energy Physics;
  • Nuclear Physics;
  • Accelerator R&D and Production; and
  • Isotope R&D and Production.

  • January 10, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. ET: DOE program opportunity webinar. If you intend to apply, this is a must!  Please register here
  • January 30, 2024: Mandatory 3-page pre-applications are due.
  • April 25, 2024: 15-page (narrative) full Applications are due. Note: Only those applicants who receive notification from DOE encouraging a formal application may submit.
