2022-2023 Schmidt Science Polymaths

Internal Deadline: August 11, 2022

Sponsor Deadline: August 31, 2022

• The key goal of the Schmidt Science Polymath program is to encourage the best “polymath” scientists to expand their research portfolio by exploring new lines of research that are substantively different from their ongoing and proven research activities. The program will offer long-term research support to recently-tenured professors (within the past 3 years) with remarkable track records and highly promising futures.

• Schmidt Futures is seeking the highest quality candidates from a specific and pivotal period in their career. In order to be eligible for nomination to the Schmidt Science Polymaths application process, candidates must meet the following qualifications:
  • Have achieved tenure (or equivalent status) within the past 3 years (2019 or after),
  • Have a remarkable record of accomplishment in area(s) of science and engineering,
  • Have a demonstrated history of pursuing and publishing results in more than one field,
  • Demonstrate a need for additional funding to enable new experiments, explorations, or shifts in research directions.
• Each professor will be awarded $500,000 per year, for up to five years to help support a research group through talent, such as three to four students or postdocs, and resources. 

2023 Sloan Research Fellowships

Internal Deadline: August 11, 2022

Sponsor Deadline: September 15, 2022

Limitation: Three (3) per school/ department

• The Sloan Research Fellowships seek to stimulate fundamental research by early-career scientists and scholars of outstanding promise. These fellowships are awarded yearly to researchers in recognition of distinguished performance and a unique potential to make substantial contributions to their field.
• Candidates must hold a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in chemistry, computational or evolutionary molecular biology, computer science, economics, mathematics, neuroscience, ocean sciences, physics, or a related field.
• The Fellowship amount is $75,000. Fellowship funds may be used by the fellow for any expense judged supportive of the fellow’s research, including staffing, professional travel, lab expenses, equipment, or summer salary support.

2023 Simons Investigators in Mathematics, Physics, Astrophysics, and Computer Science

Nominations should be treated confidentially — the nominees should not know they are being nominated.

Internal Deadline: September 6, 2022.

Limitation: Two (2) per topic area

• The Simons Foundation’s Mathematics and Physical Sciences division invites nominations for Simons Investigators in Mathematics, Physics, Astrophysics and Computer Science.
• The Simons Investigators program aims to provide a stable base of support for outstanding theoretical midcareer scientists, enabling them to undertake long-term investigations of fundamental questions in their fields. The intent of the program is to support these scientists in their most productive years, when they are establishing new research directions, providing leadership in the field and effectively mentoring junior scientists. The foundation strongly encourages the nomination of scientists from underrepresented groups.
• Investigator awards starting January 1, 2024, will receive up to $192,000 per year. This includes $150,000 per year in research support for the Investigator, $10,000 per year for the Investigator’s department, and up to an additional 20 percent per year in indirect costs to the Investigator’s institution.
