ASU Information
The Alan T. Waterman Award recognizes an outstanding young researcher in any field of science or engineering supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF). A candidate should have demonstrated exceptional individual achievement in scientific or engineering research of sufficient quality, originality, innovation, and significant impact on the field so as to situate him or her as a leader among peers. The awardee receives a grant of $1 million over a five-year period for scientific research or advanced study. Significant prior NSF award history is not a prerequisite, as many recent awardees have a minimal award history with NSF. More important is recognition and notable awards pointing to research potential and success. For example, Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), Sloane Research Fellowships, and early career awards in specific fields have all been attained by multiple winners in recent years. Notably, self-nominations are not allowed, so some level of institutional support is necessary. Strong letters of recommendation are incredibly important.
Deadline: Nominations must be submitted by September 16, 2022 via Fastlane and must include four letters of support from individuals not affiliated with ASU.
