2022 Mistletoe Research Fellowship for Postdoctoral Fellows and PhD Candidates in STEM

Research Development
May 13, 2022

Mistletoe Research Fellowship application is now open!

DEADLINE: Sunday, June 19 2022, 11:59pm Pacific Time

The Momental Foundation is a grantmaking foundation and impact-focused startup accelerator. Our mission is to build bridges between the academic, entrepreneurial, and civil communities to create a more human-centered and sustainable future through technology.

Each of our Mistletoe Research Fellows is also a participant in our Unfettered Research Grant Program and the recipient of a $10,000 research funding award.  This rare, unrestricted funding opportunity offers these academic scientists a rare chance to engage in independent research, encouraging meaningful growth, independent exploration, and risk - even serendipity and play - in their scientific research.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT: Mistletoe Research Fellowships (MRF) are open to full-time postdoctoral fellows and advanced PhD candidates in most STEM fields and a few quantitative social science fields.

These disciplines broadly include:

  • Engineering
  • Physics
  • Computer Science
  • Mathematics
  • Chemistry
  • Health Science
  • Environmental Studies / Ecology / Earth Sciences
  • Life Sciences
  • Statistics / Data Science / Informatics
  • Experimental Psychology

If you are unsure as to whether your field is classified under a broad area, please reach out to our program for clarification after checking the FAQ - Eligibility on our website. In the 2022-2023 academic year, the Momental Foundation will award up to thirty-six (36) competitive Mistletoe Research Fellowships.

FOR POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW APPLICANTS: If accepted into the program, you will need documentation of full-time postdoc employment at your university. Postdocs who are funded by external agencies are eligible as long as their primary employment relationship is with their university. Your full-time employment status must be maintained for the duration of your institution’s 2022-2023 academic calendar year and should extend through May 31, 2023.

FOR PHD CANDIDATES: Although this fellowship is primarily directed at postdocs, it is also open to full-time PhD candidates who are “all but dissertation,” meaning all your coursework is completed and a dissertation proposal has been approved. Here, full-time refers to individuals whose enrollment status is as a full-time student with stipend support. Your full-time enrollment status must be maintained for the duration of your institution’s 2022-2023 academic calendar year and should extend through May 31, 2023.
