2022 ASU KE Washington DC Leadership Forum

Are you interested in increasing your experience and understanding of the federal funding landscape to expand the depth of your sponsored project award portfolio? If so, consider applying to join an innovative team of ASU faculty that seeks to create a new way to engage with Federal funders and decision-makers in Washington DC.

The KE Washington DC Leadership Forum will help faculty members understand the broader policy environment that funders work in, how to have more impact with their science or scholarship in the policy domain, and engage with policy levers to create policy changes that lead to research opportunities. The workshops will bring together a group of interdisciplinary faculty with a group of policy and government experts from both ASU and the federal government. The format will vary but will include speakers, discussions with experts, working sessions, coaching, and participant presentations, and will involve a trip to Washington, DC, for a week in early April.

Applications are submitted via InfoReady and must be received no later than 5:00 pm, October 15, 2022. Receipt of application will be acknowledged via InfoReady (https://asu.infoready4.com/#competitionDetail/1883728).

Description of Activities

  • Engage in regular (weekly in the fall, monthly in the spring) workshop sessions
  • Develop a project concept in the fall and a personal DC strategy in the spring
  • Gain an understanding of KE and ASU DC priorities and strategies
  • Establish relationships and peer-mentorship with a diverse group of faculty and staff

Eligibility

  • Faculty from all disciplines, schools, and units from across ASU are encouraged to apply and participate.
  • You must be an ASU faculty member from any of the following categories: tenure track professors, research professors, clinical professors, or professors of practice at the assistant, associate, or full level.
  • You must be willing to share your experience with others.
  • You must be able to attend 5 in-person workshop sessions, Wednesday from 3:00 - 5:00, starting November 2.
  • You must be able to attend a week-long (Monday through Friday) hands-on working session in Washington, DC, in a to-be-determined week in April.

Application Requirements

Completed the online application form, which includes the following:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • A brief personal statement from the nominee which describes both what they want to accomplish and what they would like to gain from the experience
  • An indication of where the funding for the faculty member’s trip to Washington, DC, in the spring of 2023 (~$2,500) could come from college or unit commitment or faculty resources such as research or discretionary funds.

Ideal Candidate Competencies

  • Experience in successfully leading proposals and executing on awards as a PI or Co-PI
  • A commitment to increase one’s research, scholarship, or creative activity impact through engagement with Washington DC policymakers/actors
  • Active participation in interdisciplinary research efforts

Timeline

  • Application deadline: October 15, 5:00 pm PST via InfoReady
  • Application review: October 16-20, 2022
  • Announcement of selection: October 22, 2022
  • Workshops begins: November 2, 2022
  •  Workshops ends: May 2023
