The Arizona Biomedical Research Centre announced today that it is now accepting Letters of Intent (LOI) for a new cohort of research grants. The LOI is Phase One of a two-phase process. LOI will be accepted through June 28, 2023. Once the letters are reviewed and scored, select applicants will be invited to submit a full application.

Up to $5,000,000 per year are available for Investigator Grant (IG) and New Investigator Award (NIA) applications. The maximum award for IG Applications is $250,000 annually with a maximum project duration of three (3) years from the award date. The maximum award for NIA Applications is seventy-five thousand annually with a maximum project duration of three (3) years from the award date.

ELIGIBILITY

Any individual(s) with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research as the Program Director(s)/Principal Investigator(s) are eligible to apply for this Grant as either an IG or NIA. The Principal Investigator (PI) shall reside in Arizona. The lead institution shall originate in Arizona.

An IG Applicant shall hold an independent research position at a domestic United States (U.S.) institution. For the purpose of this RFGA, “independent research position” means a position that automatically confers eligibility, by the Applicant’s institutional policy, for an investigator to apply for National Institutes of Health (NIH) R01 grants, with an appropriate commitment of facilities to be used for the conduct of the proposed research. https://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/r01.htm

An NIA shall be an individual who has graduated with their terminal degree within ten (10) years of the LOI Due Date; or an individual who is mid-career but is shifting their research to a new field; or an individual who is re-entering the research field after a five (5) or more year break.

Current ABRC Grant Recipients may apply for either the IG or NIA as long as the Eligibility criteria are met.

The funding source for this Grant is the Health Research Fund (Tobacco Tax) as established by Arizona Revised Statute (ARS) §36-275 (https://www.azleg.gov/ars/36/00275.htm) and §36-773 (https://www.azleg.gov/ars/36/00773.htm).
